Discovering WordPress

I’ve decided to kick off my blog posts with a hail and thank you to WordPress!

Having another half who’s a bit of a whizz at WordPress, it was a no-brainer for me to decide on the platform I’d use for my new website. Though with no practical experience, I was a little nervous in the beginning, so can only imagine how nerve wracking getting to grips with WordPress is for anyone who doesn’t have a techie expert on hand 😉 For that reason, I decided I’d talk about my experiences here – in the hope it might help other newbies out there!

Why WordPress?

Let’s start with why you’d choose WordPress for your blog or website, instead of one of the other multiple site building tools out there.

  • It’s free!
  • You can customise it and create the site of your dreams.
  • Installing WordPress

Just to reiterate WordPress is an actual platform not a cute looking site – that part comes later! So you need to kick off by downloading WordPress

Sample Page

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

As a new WordPress user, you should go to your dashboard to delete this page and create new pages for your content. Have fun!
